Tips for Selecting a Self-Storage Facility

Almost everyone will use self-storage facility at some point of their lives. Not all storage facilities are designed for the same purpose. Choosing which self-storage facility best fits your needs takes careful consideration. Using these 10 items as a guide on what to consider when selecting a storage company will help you make the best decision.

  1. Location This is one of the most important factors to consider. The storage facility should be conveniently located near major highways and your work of home. If you are moving and only need the storage space for a short time, consider the advantages of using a facility that is closer to your old home or closer to the new one.
  2. Insurance Protection Modern self-storage facilities have storage insurance available if you do not already have your items covered under your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy. It is rare to use the insurance that comes with a storage unit however, if something catastrophic or unforeseen happens, you'll be happy you have it.
  3. Security Security is very important! If you are taking the time to put goods in storage you should be sure that they are safe while they are there. Newer storage facilities provide high-tech security systems including individually assigned gate access, cameras, high barrier fences and on-site management to ensure the safety of your goods and your person.
  4. Access Hours Many storage facilities are only open during certain hours of the day. It is important to take the open hours into account when selecting your storage facility. Ideally you should be able to access your self-storage locker seven days a week from early morning through the evening. 24-hour storage units sometimes attract people who want to live in their storage unit.
  5. Variety of Unit Sizes If you have a small amount of stuff to store the last thing you should do is select a storage facility that only offers one size lockers big enough to store a boat. You'll save yourself money if you choose the correct size locker for your needs. The storage facility you choose should offer both small and extra-large lockers so you never pay more than you should.
  6. Supportive Services Most storage facilities provide services and supplies. They sell boxes, tape, rental trucks and furniture. Storage facilities should have dollies and carts they can lend you to help ease your move.
  7. Outside Storage If you need to store an RV or other large vehicle, make sure there is space on the property for outdoor storage. If you need the space to be covered make sure that is something that they offer.
  8. Courteous Staff Make sure you pick a storage facility with respectable staff. They should go through a background check before becoming employed at the facility.
  9. Terms of Service Month-to-month storage contracts  are usually the best option because you have the flexibility to set-up month payments and can end the contract at any time.
  10. Pest Management Depending on where you live, there may or may not be a need to worry about pests (mice, rats, insects). Newer facilities usually have very few problems including pests but it is still a good idea to ask what their protocol is in the event of an infestation.
Storage facilities offer you many options and no matter what your individual needs are, you should be able to find the right location for you and your goods.

  2. So different storage units vary with what access hours they offer? It's important to me that we can get into our storage 24 hours a day. That's really what I'm looking for with where we store our spare car.

  3. These are great things to look for. I've been noticing in my searches that a lot of storage facilities require you to have insurance when renting. From what I have seen it isn't that much more to have their insurance added on. That is a nice feature a lot of storage facilities offer now. https://www.stowawaytn.com/self-storage-kingsport-tn-145006

  4. There are a lot of things to think about and prepare for when you put stuff in storage. I would have never thought to protect against pests. It's probably important to make sure there aren't any termites or anything like that on your storage item before you put it in the locker. Thanks for the article, it was very helpful. http://24hrselfstorage.com/location/kingsport

  6. My wife has so many Christmas decorations in our attic. I've told her every year that I want to get rid of them so we can fit other stuff up there. She has never really listened to me though. Maybe a storage unit would be a good compromise. http://www.accessselfstorage.org

  7. Thanks for sharing these tips on choosing a self storage unit! It really is important to have a unit that is close by. If you don't then it'll be a lot harder to move stuff in and out of storage. Plus, you don't want to worry about taking a lot of time to grab something when you need it quickly. http://www.penrithlockupstorage.com.au/contact

  8. My wife and I are needing to downsize for a couple months while we house sit for a couple we both know. We are thinking it would be easier to put our things in a storage facility instead of bringing them with us. Thanks for sharing these tips on what to look for. I agree that a variety of sizes would be nice to have. We need one big enough to hold all our furniture as well as our smaller things.
